BARBERTON DIV. III SECTIONAL

ROOTSTOWN 56, WELLINGTON 29

The Rovers were victorious Thursday night in their Barberton Division III Sectional final, defeating Wellington by a final of 56-29.

The Rovers (11-13 overall) came out hot in the first quarter, putting together a 21-9 run that overwhelmed the Dukes.

Madison Hartung knocked down three 3-pointers in the quarter to pace the Rovers, who will be moving on to square off against top-seeded Elyria Catholic next Tuesday at Barberton High School in the district semifinals.

"We came out and really jumped on them," Rootstown head coach Jay Airhart said. "We put some pressure on their guards and were able to create some turnovers and get off to a real good start."

Rootstown added to that lead in the third quarter with a 17-5 run that built a 45-19 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

"At times this year, we've had halftime leads we let slip away," Airhart said. "But it was great to come out and outscore a team like we did in the third tonight."

Hartung finished with 13 points and six assists to lead the Rovers. Joining her were teammates Brandi Barkhurst, who scored seven points and pulled down seven rebounds, and Cayanne Breznak, who finished with 11 points off the bench for Rootstown.
