KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Taylor Williams picked up his ninth win of the season in his third complete game victory as Kent State (28-21, 15-7) took advantage of Western Michigan's (15-33, 7-15) errors to win 3-0.
Williams allowed only two hits in the game and struck out seven batters while walking none. He faced just three batters over the minimum. Williams' 91 strikeouts on the season now puts him in the Kent State record books at tenth all-time for strikeouts in a season.
"Taylor Williams was as good as he's been all year long," said head coach Scott Stricklin. "I thought he got stronger as the game went on."
Offensively, Kent State struggled in the game, leaving 13 men on base, a reoccurring problem as they left 30 men on in last weekend's series against Central Michigan. Bases were left loaded in the third and fourth innings and a runner was left in scoring position in the second, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth,
"We've got to put the ball in play there and make something happen," said Stricklin. "There's no question it's mental right now. We just have to relax a little bit and let it happen."
Four Western Michigan errors resulted in a three-run seventh inning for the Golden Flashes. The Broncos had five errors in the game.
"We were able to take advantage of a couple of their mistakes," Stricklin said. "We had chances to score and we didn't. But we stuck with it and got breaks and lucky for us they made a couple of errors that opened the door for us."
The seventh inning began with back-to-back errors allowing Derek Toadvine and Sawyer Polen to get on base. Evan Campbell advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt before George Roberts reached on another error that emptied the bases, scoring two.
After Roberts stole second, he came home when Zarley Zalewski reached on the final error of the inning.
Zalewski was the only Golden Flashes to have a multi-hit day. He went 2-for-5. Alex Miklos' double in the second inning was the only extra-base hit of the day.
The two teams face off again on this afternoon at 1:00pm.
