With the opportunity to qualify for the 25th Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship, Northern Ohio PGA professionals gathered for the annual Senior NOPGA Championship at Mayfield Country Club for a 36-hole championship.
Defending champion Gary Robison of Canton Brookside Country Club successfully repeated as the NOPGA 2013 Senior Professional Champion after winning a one-hole, sudden death playoff over Tom Herzan of Findlay Country Club.
The two had played to a 136-stroke tie over the two days of the event.
The top three players in the NOPGA event qualify for the PGA National Event to be held at Creighton Farms and River Creek Club in Virginia in October.
Joining Robison and Herzan at the national championship will be Gary Trivisonno of Aurora who finished in third place with rounds of 66-74 for a 140 total.
Gary's round 66 had him tied for the lead at the end of the first day with Herzan but a difficult back nine on the second day included two bogeys and a double despite the two birdies on the front nine.
Still, two pars to finish the round kept Trivisonno solidly in the top three for the opportunity to advance to the Senior PGA Championship.
Just missing qualifying was Tom Atchison of Silver Lake, the PGA professional at Congress Lake Country Club, who fired rounds of 71-70 for a 141, just missing the cut to the national championship but still cashing in the event.
Atchison had three birdies during his second 18 holes as he tried to overcome the one-shot deficit.
The next event on the Northern Ohio PGA schedule is at Barrington Golf Club in Aurora on Monday.
The stroke play event features Northern Ohio golf pros while the Collegiate Preview tourney includes more than 30 men and women golfers ages 18 to 22.
