Colin Reardon has officially won Kent State's 2013 quarterback derby.
Reardon was listed as the starting signal-caller in the depth chart released by first-year head coach Paul Haynes on Monday. The redshirt freshman has battled senior David Fisher through spring drills and preseason camp.
Reardon, a 6-foot-1, 202-pound QB from Poland, Ohio, has shown solid arm strength and accuracy throughout preseason camp. He has also sported excellent athleticism, making several big plays on scrambles.
Fisher (6-1, 220) backed up four-year starter Spencer Keith last season after transferring from Vista junior college in California.
Haynes could not be reached for comment on Monday, but did post a blog message on the Golden Flashes' official website.
"We had all of the coaches meet with the players (Sunday) night just to tell them where they are with regard to this first depth chart," said Haynes. "But that status only applies to Monday, Aug. 19. We still have a long way to go until we play, so if they want to change it, show us. The depth chart isn't set until Thursday, Aug. 29 (the season opener against Liberty)."
Haynes said following Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage that the quarterback position in particular would be evaluated on a weekly basis.
"I'm not a rotating-type guy, I like one quarterback. It'll be week to week, though," he said. "The person's going to have to continue to earn it. You're the starting quarterback (in the opener against) Liberty, but (game two against Bowling Green) -- we'll see."
The depth chart also revealed the starters at several other positions that were up for grabs when preseason camp began back on Aug. 1.
Joining returning starters Pat McShane (6-5, 300, left guard) and Phil Huff (6-3, 290, center) on the offensive line are junior left tackle Terrell Johnson (6-4, 302), sophomore right guard Anthony Pruitt (6-2, 315) and sophomore right tackle Jason Bitsko (6-3, 280). True freshman Wayne Scott (6-3, 345) is listed as the backup to McShane, who is sidelined indefinitely because of a knee injury.
At linebacker, junior letterman DeVante' Strickland is listed as the starter at Will and sophomore Matt Dellinger is listed first at the Mike. The Flashes lost all of their starting linebackers from last year to graduation.
In the secondary, junior Calvin Tiggle has recaptured the starting spot at free safety. Tiggle suffered a season-ending knee injury midway through the 2012 season. Junior Dylan Farrington has earned the nod at cornerback opposite senior returnee Darius Polk, while sophomore Jordan Italiano is the starter at the Star (hybrid linebacker/defensive back) slot.
Little to anyone's surprise, Aurora graduate Anthony Melchiori is listed as the team's starting punter and kicker.
The Golden Flashes will open up the 2013 season on Aug. 29 at Dix Stadium in Kent against Liberty University. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff and will include a variety of pregame, in-game and postgame festivities as coordinated by Ametek, including fireworks at the game's conclusion.
