Late on Saturday evening, Bryan Harvey, coach of the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders girls golf team, and his players returned from the Midway Classic at Skyland Pines Golf Course in Canton.
Behind the medalist scoring of Kasey Nielsen, the girls golf team finished in fourth place, just four strokes out of first, among a tournament that featured the class teams of the state.
"We were paired with, what I consider, the three top teams in the state of Ohio and we responded with a very good score," said Harvey.
Roosevelt fired a 322 behind Jackson and Dublin Jerome's 318s and Toledo St. Ursula's 321.
The girls were on their game as Kelly Nielsen carded a 76, Kory Nielsen 79, Chloe Wise 94 and Coreena Wise 103.
"Kasey was on top of her game today," said Harvey. "She was the best on the course."
Nielsen birdied the toughest hole on the course enabling her to stay in front of the field.
One girl does not make a great score and Kasey had the help of the entire team to push them above schools like Pickerington North, Dublin Coffman and Medina Highland.
"Kelly was great all day and Kory, despite a shaky start, played her last seven holes at even par," said Harvey.
Chloe Wise continues to impress the coach as a freshman.
"She only had one three-putt and shot a respectable 94," said Harvey.
You can't complain when you are always in the running for several of the top spots in any tournament but Cody Tuttle must be wondering if he is going to be on the plus side of a playoff.
Since the Portage County Junior Amateur, he has been involved in four actual or scorecard playoffs and lost each of them.
This past week at the Windmill Classic, Tuttle lost the scorecard playoff on the No. 1 handicap hole after carding a 73 on the tough fairways in Ravenna.
Still ... he really can't complain about a solid 3-over-par.
Two high school tournaments featuring quality teams were held within the borders of Portage County.
Rootstown High School hosted the annual Rover Invitational with 18 teams competing at Kent State University Golf Course.
Ravenna High School hosted the annual Windmill Classic at Windmill Lakes Golf Course with 19 teams competing.
It was a great week for followers of high school golf.
MATCHES OF THE WEEK
PTC County Division -- Rootstown travels to Southeast to play Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course today. Southeast has was considered one of the top three teams in the County Division at the beginning of the season and has had a solid run through the high school tournament season but floundered when they lost to Streetsboro at Raccoon Hill. It damaged a perfect record. Rootstown was admittedly looking to improve as the season continued but knocked off the Mogadore Wildcats at Kent State University on the back nine.
It could be an interesting match even though Southeast would have to have the nod thanks to the home course advantage and their two top golfers, Cody Tuttle and Joey Kainrad.
PTC Metro Division -- Kent Roosevelt is always the favorite going into the PTC golf season and is still the current, reigning champion. While the Rough Riders shouldn't look past an improving Field on Monday, Thursday at Ravenna could prove to be a close match between the Ravens and Kent Roosevelt. Mike McKinney of Kent Roosevelt has proven he picked up where he left off last season as the PTC Metro Player of the Year, playing well in tournaments throughout August.
Kent Roosevelt girls -- Kent Roosevelt travels to Prestwick Country Club in Green to compete in the Lady Warrior Invitational. The Rough Riders have proven they are among the best teams in the state and should continue their outstanding tournament play at this event.
Kent Roosevelt is currently 10-0 in match play.
Southeast girls -- As part of the Greater Akron Girls Golf League, Southeast has only lost one match. This week they travel to Fox Den Golf Course on Thursday to take on Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy.
