Record-Courier staff report
Kent Roosevelt will be the third team to leave the Portage Trail Conference since its formation in 2005.
Windham and East Canton, both former members of the County Division, officially left the conference this school year, while the Rough Riders will be the first to depart from the Metro Division.
It was announced on Saturday by the Kent City School District that all of the school's athletic teams will join the Suburban League beginning in the 2016-17 school year.
The decision is pending approval from the board of education. The next school board meeting is on Tuesday.
"We have appreciated and enjoyed our tenure in the Portage Trail Conference and will miss the competitiveness of this outstanding conference," Kent Roosevelt High School principal Bob Klinar said. "However, we are also looking forward to becoming a member of the Suburban League, with its rich tradition, support and emphasis on the total student-athlete in academics, athletics and the arts."
The Suburban League, which was originally formed in 1949, is currently an eight-team league, which consists of Summit County schools Copley, Green, Tallmadge, Nordonia and Revere, along with Cloverleaf, Highland and Wadsworth of Medina County.
