Rootstown's Jessica Eye improved her record to 10-1-0 Saturday when she captured a slit decision over Sarah Kaufman (16-3) in a Mixed Martial Arts Women's Bantamweight Division match at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
Kaufman nearly knocked out Eye in the third round, but with the 10-9 scoring system the former Rover athlete was able to gut out the close decision.
Two judges had it 29-28 for Eye, while one had to 29-28 for Kaufman.
Kaufman landed a few to Eye's head early in the first round, but Eye responded with peppering, fast-paced combinations to win round one.
After an even second round, Eye blackened Kaufman's left eye and wound up winning the round and the fight.
Eye, who is known throughout the MMA world as Jessica "Evil" Eye, is a 2005 graduate of Rootstown.
Eye, who played soccer, basketball and track at Rootstown in high school, is currently ranked No. 9 in the world pound-for-pound for female MMA fighters.
Eye's home gym is Strong Style Martial Arts and Fitness Center, which is located in Independence.
