Rootstown wrestling advances to semifinal round of OHSAA's dual meet state tourney

The Rootstown Rovers wrestling team won both of their OHSAA Dual Meet State Championship matches on Wednesday night, defeating Waterloo 64-13 and Pymatuning Valley 57-24.

The regional quarterfinal level matches were hosted by Rootstown High School, with the school pushing their girls basketball game against Garfield to tonight with a 7:30 p.m. start.

As for the Rovers wrestlers, they were rather dominant.

Outside of eight forfeit wins combined between the two matches, Rootstown wins included eight pins.

In the victory over Waterloo, the Rovers received pins from Dalton Leightner (106 pounds), Zach Ladish (160) and Jacob Elam (195). The win over Pymatuning Valley, pins came from Leightner, Tony Paulucci (120), Jason Sadler (145), Luke Sorboro (152) and Travis Linton (195).

With the pair of wins, Rootstown advances to the regional semifinal round of the Division III, Region 19-B bracket. The semifinals will be held at a site to be determined on Jan. 29, with a start time of 5 p.m. scheduled. Reports on who Rootstown's opponent will be was not reported to the Record-Courier by Wednesday's deadline.

In other Dual Meet State Championship action on Wednesday, Lake defeated Kent Roosevelt 71-9 in Division I, Region 4-A; Beaver defeated Southeast 30-27 in Division II, Region 12-B; and Minerva defeated Streetsboro 69-9 in Division II, Region 12-B.
