Record-Courier staff report

A contingent of Portage Trail Conference track and field standouts will look to break out of the winter doldrums that have blanketed Northeast Ohio and get an early jumpstart to the spring season.

In total, 14 student-athletes will represent the PTC at today's Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches' Indoor Track and Field state championships hosted by the University of Akron's Stiles Athletics Field House.

Leaging the parade of PTC standouts is Garfield junior Edie Svonavec, who enters the competition ranked No. 1 in the shot put in all divisions. Garfield is a Division II competitor. Additionally, Svonavec is currently ranked 14th nationally in the event among some of the country's most sought after Division I college recruits.

Svonavec is a two-time state qualifier for the G-Men and finished second last year at the OHSAA's outdoor state championships with a throw of 45 feet, 91⁄2 inches. The throw set a new school record at Garfield.
