MEN'S BASKETBALL

OHIO 76, BALL STATE 64

ATHENS -- Nick Kellogg scored 17 points as No. 5 seed Ohio beat 12th-seeded Ball State 76-64 in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Monday.

Ohio led by as many as 18 in the second half until Ball State cut it to 10 points with 4:24 left. Then Kellogg made a 3-pointer during a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Javarez Willis had 15 for Ohio (22-10) and Travis Wilkins hit 4-of-5 3-pointers.

Ohio built a 38-26 advantage at halftime as the Bobcats made seven 3-pointers and hit 50 percent of its 26 field goals. Wilkins and Willis combined to make 8-of-11 shots, 6-of-8 3-pointers and had 11 points each.

Ball State (5-25) was paced by Zavier Turner with 14 points and Majok Majok had 13.

Ohio will play No. 8 Miami in the second round on Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Eastern Michigan 72, Central Michigan 60

YIPSILANTI, Mich. -- Karrington Ward scored 20 points, hitting 6-of-9 3-pointers, as sixth-seeded Eastern Michigan pulled away from 11-seed Central Michigan on Monday in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.

Eastern (19-13) had a double figure lead but after back-to-back 3s from Blake Hibbitts, Central (10-21) trailed 46-44 with 8:37 to go. However, Eastern then reeled off 18-straight points, fueled by Ward's three treys, making it 64-44 with 3:27 to go.

The Eagles will play seventh-seeded Northern Illinois on Wednesday when the tournament resumes in Cleveland.

Eastern had six different players hit 3s, going 12-of-28 from behind the line. Daylen Harrison had 13 points and Ray Lee and Mike Talley 11 each.

The Chippewas had 10 3s but put up 32 shots behind the arc, shooting 39.6 percent overall for the game. John Simons scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Hibbitts had 11 points.

Northern Illinois 54, Bowling Green 51 (OT)

DEKALB, Ill. -- Jordan Threloff split a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left in overtime for the games' final point as seventh-seeded Northern Illinois beat No. 10 seed Bowling Green 54-51 in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Monday.

Jehvon Clarke's game-tying 3-point attempt was off the mark.

Clarke's trey to end regulation was Bowling Green's only field goal in the final 4 minutes of the second half. Aaric Armstead made the first of two free throws with 25 seconds left to set up Clarke's make.

Threloff had 13 points and nine rebounds for Northern Illinios (15-16). Armstead finished with 12 points and had four of Northern Illinois' 17 steals.

Clarke had 15 points for Bowling Green (12-20) and Richaun Holmes and Cameron Black (Kent Roosevelt) had 10 apiece. Holmes had 14 rebounds and Black added nine.

Northern Illinois plays No. 6 Eastern Michigan on Wednesday in the second round.
