Kent State's Tayala finishes fifth at NCAAs in weight throw

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Kent State sophomore Matthias Tayala set a new Kent State record in the weight throw on Friday, helping the NCAA Championships finalist to a fifth-place finish in the event at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico.

Tayala's new school mark breaks the one he had previously set at 72 feet, 21⁄2 inches.

Friday's throw landed at 72 feet, 61⁄4 inches, coming on his final throw of the competition.

Tayala's previous throws were heaved at 67 feet, 11 inches, 67 feet, 103⁄4 inches, 71 feet, 71⁄4 inches and 69 feet, 51⁄2 inches. His fifth throw was a foul before he uncorked his record-setting attempt.
