ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Kent State sophomore Matthias Tayala set a new Kent State record in the weight throw on Friday, helping the NCAA Championships finalist to a fifth-place finish in the event at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico.
Tayala's new school mark breaks the one he had previously set at 72 feet, 212 inches.
Friday's throw landed at 72 feet, 614 inches, coming on his final throw of the competition.
Tayala's previous throws were heaved at 67 feet, 11 inches, 67 feet, 1034 inches, 71 feet, 714 inches and 69 feet, 512 inches. His fifth throw was a foul before he uncorked his record-setting attempt.
