The 2014 season is shaping up to be a special one for Garfield junior Edie Svonavec.
Just a week removed from winning a state championship at the OATCCC Indoor Track and Field event, the shot put standout placed fifth over the weekend at the New Balance Nationals.
The event was hosted at The Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y., and placed Svonavec in direct competition with some of the best prep athletes from around the United States.
Svonavec, who entered the competition ranked 14th nationally in her division, earned her respected placement after a throw of 46 feet, 23⁄4 inches.
To win her state championship one week prior, Svonavec released a throw of 44 feet 71⁄4 inches.
The four athletes that placed ahead of Svonavec at nationals were: Raven Saunders, Burke (S.C.), 56 feet, 71⁄2 inches; Ashlei Blake, Liberty, 53 feet, 101⁄4 inches; Stamatia Scarvelis, Dos Pueblos Senior (Calif.), 52 feet, 8 inches; and Lena Giger, Highland, 50 feet.
