Kent State junior standout Matthias Tayala broke the university's longstanding 42-year record for the hammer throw during last Saturday's Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus.
The record had stood for more than four decades after being set by Olympian Al Schoterman.
Schoterman's record was 231 feet, 3 inches, but was bested by Tayala's throw of 235 feet, 1 inch.
Schoterman was the NCAA champion in the hammer throw in 1972 after finishing fourth in the event in 1970 and second in 1971. He competed in the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
