AKRON -- The Akron RubberDucks fell behind 4-0 after two innings and couldn't recover en route to dropping a 5-3 decision to the Altoona Curve on Friday night at Canal Park in Akron.
A two-run triple in the top of the first inning and a two-run double in the second staked Altoona to its 4-0 lead. Akron bounced back with two runs of its own in the sixth, scoring on an error and a double-play ball to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The RubberDucks narrowed the margin to 4-3 in the eighth on an RBI triple by centerfielder Tyler Naquin, but Altoona got the run back in the top of the ninth to make it 5-3.
Akron then threatened in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on first and second with two outs. However, Curve reliever Ryan Beckman induced Ducks pinch-hitter Joe Wendle to pop out to second base to end the game.
Naquin, shortstop Francisco Lindor, catcher Tony Wolters and second baseman Justin Toole each finished with two hits for Akron.
RubberDucks starter Gabriel Arias (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs (all earned) on two hits, three walks and five strikeouts in four innings of work.
Akron's Duke von Schamann was solid in relief of Arias, holding Altoona to just one run over the final five innings. Von Schamann scattered two hits while walking none and striking out four.
Altoona starter Joely Rodriguez (1-2) picked up the win, limiting the RubberDucks to two runs on six hits over six innings. Rodriguez struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Beckman earned his second save of the season.
Akron will host Altoona today at Canal Park. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:05 p.m.
