COLUMBUS -- The Record-Courier's sports department was honored by the Associated Press on Sunday at the organization's annual journalism excellence award banquet held in Columbus.

The department received a third-place award for Best Daily Sports Section. R-C sports editor Tom Nader accepted the award on the department's and newspaper's behalf.

The R-C was judged against other newspapers throughout the state of Ohio with similar circulation size. In total, the AP awards contest received 2,599 entries that spanned multiple categories.

The recognition for the R-C sports team comes after the Press Club of Cleveland recognized it as the Best Section in Ohio during their awards banquet last year.

The R-C's sports department is comprised of Nader, assistant sports editor Tom Hardesty, staff writers Allen Moff and Sara Welch, photographers Lisa Scalfaro, Robert J. Lucas, Amanda Woolf, Megann Galehouse and Jeff Lange, along with contributors Persh Rohrer, Chuck Condley, Jim Manion, Eric Clutter, Susan Jenior and Jack Kiser.

"I am very proud of our entire staff for all of their hard work to be recognized," Nader said. "We have a special team that works well together, and we feel honored to receive an award that measures the excellence we strive for every day for our readers."
