Akron RubberDucks defeat New Britain Rock Cats 5-3 behind big seventh inning

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Akron RubberDucks pulled away from a 2-1 lead with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the New Britain Rock Cats 5-3 on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Ducks improved to 36-21 on the season and lead the Eastern League's Western Division by 41⁄2 games over Richmond.

Akron struck first blood in the game when second baseman Joe Wendle ripped a two-out, two-run triple in the third inning.

The Rock Cats cut it to 2-1 in the sixth, setting up Akron's three-run seventh. Third baseman Ronny Rodriguez, who finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, got things started with an RBI single for a 3-1 lead. Designated hitter Alex Lavisky followed with an RBI triple, and centerfielder Tyler Naquin plated the final Akron run with a bunt single for a 5-1 cushion.

New Britain scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-3 but could get no closer.
