NEW BRITIAN, Conn. -- Catcher Alex Lavisky went 4-for-5 at the plate while designated hitter Joe Wendle went 3-for-5, including his sixth home run of the season, as the Akron RubberDucks downed the New Britain Rock Cats in a 9-6 slugfest Wednesday night that saw the two teams combine for 26 hits.
Akron, which improved to 37-21 on the season, pounded out 15 hits on the night, with Lavisky leading the way with four in raising his batting average to .321. First baseman Bryan LaHair finished with four RBI for the RubberDucks, improving his average to .303.
The hit parade started early, with Akron scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Francisco Lindor doubled home the first run, followed by LaHair's two-run double that made it 3-0.
The Rock Cats answered with three runs of their own in the home half of the first to tie the game, but Wendle responded with a two-run homer in the top of the second for a 5-3 Akron lead.
The Ducks made it 6-3 in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by LaHair, but New Britain got the run back in the bottom of the inning.
Akron then put some distance on the Cats with a run in the fifth on right fielder Jordan Smith's sacrifice fly, and two more in the sixth on LaHair's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by second baseman Tony Wolters for a 9-4 cushion.
New Britain managed just a run in the bottom of the inning and another in the seventh the rest of the way.
