Record-Courier staff report
Kent State men's basketball head coach Rob Senderoff announced the team's 13-game non-conference schedule on Monday for the 2014-15 season.
Seven of those games will be played in Kent at the M.A.C. Center. Of the six road games, the highest-profile matchup will be a road game at Kansas on Dec. 30. In total, the Flashes' games against teams outside of the Mid-American Conference will feature four teams that played in the postseason a year ago, along with two regular-season league champs and three schools that won at least 23 games in 2013-14.
"We are excited about the non-conference schedule we put together," said Senderoff. "There are some good matchups that will challenge us early on as we get our guys ready for conference play and provide our fans with what we expect to be exciting basketball."
KSU will open its season at Youngstown State on Nov. 15, then will host the first-ever Men Against Breast Cancer Classic on Nov. 18 versus Malone University. The inaugural event will carry over into the later portion of that week, when the Flashes will also host Illinois-Chicago, Southern Illinois and Yale for three straight nights of doubleheader action at the M.A.C. Center on Nov. 21-23.
"We are thrilled to host the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic," Senderoff said. "The doubleheaders each night should provide our fans with excellent mid-major basketball. Illinois-Chicago plays in the Horizon League, which is a league we like to compete against. Southern Illinois is a team that we've had some great battles with in the past. And Yale returns nearly everybody of note from a very successful season. This is a team that finished behind only Harvard in the Ivy League and reached the championship game of the CIT."
