Report: Cavaliers hire L.A. Clippers' Tyronn Lue as assistant

CLEVELAND -- Tyronn Lue is joining the Cavaliers after all.

Lue, who had two interviews during Cleveland's coaching search, has been added to new coach David Blatt's staff, a person familiar with the hiring told the Associated Press on Monday. Lue will be an associate head coach under Blatt, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team is not publicly commenting on the move.

Yahoo! first reported Lue's hiring.

Lue was one of the finalists to get the Cleveland job before it went to Blatt, who signed a three-year contract on Friday. The 55-year-old Blatt has never coached in the NBA -- or the U.S. -- so bringing in a coach with Lue's experience will help him and give the Cavs an insurance policy.

The 37-year-old Lue played guard for 11 seasons with seven NBA teams. He spent the past five years working on Doc Rivers' staff in Boston and Los Angeles and is regarded as one of the league's rising young coaches.

Blatt, who led Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Euroleague championship this year and guided Russia to an Olympic bronze medal at the 2012 London Games, will be introduced at a news conference on Wednesday.

As the Cavs consider other candidates to join Blatt's staff, they are finalizing plans for Thursday's draft. Cleveland has the No. 1 overall pick for the second year in a row and is expected to select either Duke forward Jabari Parker or Kansas forward Andrew Wiggins.

Cavs to host new coach's former team

CLEVELAND -- New Cavaliers coach David Blatt will face his former team from Israel in an exhibition game.

One of Europe's top coaches, Blatt was hired last week by the Cavs. He'll coach against Maccabi Tel Aviv on Oct. 5 as this year's Euroleague champions begin their U.S. tour against Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena. Maccabi will play at Brooklyn two nights later.

Blatt spent six seasons coaching at Maccabi. He signed a three-year deal with the Cavs on Friday, ending the club's 39-day search for their third coach in three years. The 55-year-old Blatt will be introduced at a news conference Wednesday.

Blatt is the first European coach to make the jump to the NBA. He led Russia to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
