WORLD CUP: United States men's soccer team advances to knockout round of 16

Record-Courier staff report Published:

Despite losing 1-0 to Germany on Thursday in Brazil, the United State men's soccer team advanced in World Cup play.

After finishing 1-1-1 in the first round with a win over Ghana, tie with Portugal and loss to Germany, the  Americans still qualified for the knockout round of 16.

The next game for the U.S. will be on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against either Belgium or Algeria. Both countries play on Thursday afternoon to determine which opponent will play the United States and Germany.

Advancing was not easy for the United States, which were part of what was tabbed the "Group of Death." Against the Germans on Thursday, team USA needed a win or tie to secure an advance. In the case of a loss, which is what happened on Thursday to Germany, the United States needed at least a one-goal victory by Portugal over Ghana. Portugal delivered with a 2-1 win.
