The Kent State softball team is headed to the Lone Star State.
The Mid-American Conference Tournament champion Kent State softball team was seeded fourth in the Waco Regional, and will face No. 1 seed Baylor in its opening game of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. The starting time had not been determined at press time.
The Golden Flashes (32-26) captured their first MAC tourney title since 2008 by winning three games on Saturday at Firestone Stadium in Akron, the final two over Ohio University. The Bears (43-12), ranked 12th in the country, finished third in the Big 12 Tournament by blanking Texas 7-0 last weekend. They are 24-2 at home in 2017. The other two teams in the Waco Regional are James Madison (50-6) and Oregon State (28-25).
The Bears are led by Lindsey Cargill, with a .461 average, and Kyla Walker, who is hitting .412. They are tied for the team lead with three triples apiece.
Baylor is filled with speed, as five different Bears players have 10-plus steals. Again, Cargill (33 steals in 39 tries) and Walker (18 steals in 24 attempts) lead the way, but Jessie Scroggins, with 16 swipes, isn't far behind.
The Bears have a dominant duo on the hill, with Kelsee Selman (22-8, 1-44 ERA) and Gia Rodoni (15-2, 1.75) leading the way. Rodoni is averaging more than a strikeout per inning.
