It was a beautiful day for the 22nd annual Kent Area Chamber of Commerce/Kent State University Athletics Golf Outing at the event's new location: Raccoon Hill Golf Club in Kent.

Eighteen teams filled the fairways as coaches from Kent State's varsity sports and athletic department members competed with the teams. Others were at the course for registration and during the tee-off for the meet and greet.

"It's a collaborative relationship between the Chamber and the Athletic Department," said Lori Wemhoff, executive director of the KACC.

The winning team, representing Kent Roosevelt DECA included team members: Brent Pfeiffer, DECA instructor; Josh Kelling of Josh's Buckeye Carpet Cleaning in Kent, and Mike McKee and Todd Starkey, KSU women's basketball coaches. The team fired a 55 (15-under-par).

Mettis Construction Services and UH Portage Medical Center are longtime sponsors of the event, but members of the Chamber and community members have been supportive of the scramble event.

NATHAN TARTER'S VICTORY

At Canterbury Golf Club, Cleveland

The second of the series of Stroke Play events hosted by the Northern Ohio PGA had a decidedly local lean at the top of the leader board.

Taking first place with a score of 70, 2-under-par, was Mogadore's Nathan Tarter.

Tarter had five birdies, including three on the back-nine for the three-stroke victory over NOPGA head professional Mitch Camp of Club Walden in Aurora.

IT REALLY HAPPENED

Father and Son at the Ohio Senior Open

Steve Jurick of Dayton is the PGA Executive Director of Miami Valley Golf Association -- the southwest version of the Northern Ohio Golf Association in Northeast Ohio.

A strong competitor, Jurick played in the recent Ohio Senior Open hosted by the Northern Ohio PGA in the regular, age 50 and older, division.

While many of the seniors competing took advantage of the allowable riding carts in the statewide event, Jurick had a familiar person carrying the bag for him, his 79-year-old father.

Bob Jurick, carried the bag the entire 18 holes both days of the tournament and often carries his own bag when he plays. He introduced his son to the game and they have continued to love golf together.
