Garfield senior Lauren Jones and Rootstown senior Abby Moore were selected to represent Ohio at the Midwest Meet of Champions, which was hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
The meet brings together the best of the best from Ohio, Michigan and Indiana, to crown an overall champion of the Midwest following a dual meet.
Jones, who recently won her third straight Division II state championship in the discus, competed in the same event and placed third overall with a throw of 150 feet. The throw came on her first attempt and was followed by a throw of 149 feet, 5 inches, two fouls and a final throw of 148-6. Jones earned six points for Ohio with her effort.
Moore competed in the shot put and placed fifth overall with a throw of 45-5, her last throw attempt, which was preceded by two fouls and throws of 44-0 and 41-7.5. Moore earned two points for Ohio.
Ohio won the team championship with a total score of 228 points, besting Michigan's 160.5 and Indiana's 84.5. The Ohio men, which did not have any Portage County participants, also won the team title with 179 points, with Michigan (149) in second and Indiana (147) in third.
