Lots of water and the coolest golf clothes available were the requirements for Tuesday's Northern Ohio PGA Junior qualifier at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna for boys ages 16 to 19.
Juniors boys from throughout Northeast Ohio began their round off the first tee as the tournament didn't wrap up until the early evening.
Best score of the day, and the individual qualifier from the event, was Brandon Bodis of Avon Lake, who remained calm as he fired a 2-over-par 72.
Bodis' round included a triple bogey that might have doomed his round. After three straight pars, Bodis scored an eight on the par 5 fourth hole, but he steadied himself and followed that with a par and a birdie. Coming in on the back nine, he had three birdies that helped him to the 2-over-par 72.
In the top 10 locally was Derek Miller of Garrettsville. Miller, who will be a senior for the Garfield G-Men this fall, tied for sixth place with a final score of 77.
After carding 5-over par on the front nine, Miller managed two birdies on the back nine -- on the tough 18th hole and the par 3 14th hole -- on his way to that four-way tie for sixth place.
It was the fifth tournament for Miller in the NOPGA series this season, with Windmill his best finish.
Kyle Smith of Kent tied for 17th place with an 11-over-par 81, making it into the point count that advances juniors to the Kenny Novak Championship in July at Club Walden in Aurora.
The individual winner, Bodis, automatically qualifies for the NOPGA Junior PGA Championship qualifier at Shady Hollow in Massillon.
Other locals Tuesday included Michael Avalon of Aurora, tied for 24th; former Portage County Amateur Junior champion Joey Vitali of Warren, tied for 36th; Laszlo May of Rootstown, tied for 38th; Bailey Campbell of Mogadore, tied for 48th; Matthew Maselli of Aurora, tied for 51st; and Paul Harris of Ravenna, tied for 59th.
Today, the boys and girls ages 12 to 15 tee off at Windmill Lakes for the second day of the NOPGA Junior PGA qualifier.
