Junior golfers took one final opportunity to qualify for the Northern Ohio PGA Kenny Novak Championship at the final qualifier held at Fox Den Golf Course in Stow on Friday.
Golfers from the greater Portage County area peppered the leaderboard in all six divisions of boys and girls at the event.
BOYS 16 TO 19
Michael Avalon, a senior for Aurora, was near the top of the leaderboard for the oldest boys division.
Avalon fired a 74, four-over-par, on his way to a top 10 finish.
Landing in seventh place, Avalon birdied six holes, including four on the back nine for the four-over-par scorecard.
Norton's Adam Filo and Garfield's Derek Miller, both members of the First Team All-PTC in 2016, tied for ninth place with six-over-par 76s.
Miller started out with seven straight pars before taking a bogey on the eight hole, then strung together three more pars before struggling over the final seven fairways.
But Miller stayed strong to finish with a 76 to land in the top 10 of the field.
Filo had one birdie and 11 pars for his round, a balanced one with a 39 and 37 for the two nines.
Also competing were two Field golfers, Bailey Campbell and Austin Goodwill, who finished in the top 20, tied with identical scores of 10-over-par 80. Also finishing near the top were Kent Roosevelt's Kyle Smith, who fired an 81 to finish in 25th place, and Ravenna's Paul Harris, who turned in a scorecard with an 11-over-par 81.
Roosevelt golfers Griffen Wise (36th) and Dylan Markham (44th) competed, as did Aurora golfer Matthew Maselli, who finished in 41st place with a 90.
The division was won by Austin Jacobs of Jefferson, who earned first place with his one-under-par 69.
GIRLS 16 TO 19
There was cheers all around in the oldest girls division as Lauren Griggy of Uniontown earned a hole-in-one on the Par 3 4th hole at Fox Den. Griggy went on to fire an 88, good for 15th place.
Hannah Finley of Kent, a member of the Hoban Knights, and Grace Thompson, a member of the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders, each earned top-10 finishes with Finley firing a 79 and Thompson an 83.
Finley's tie for fifth included a birdie on the 12th hole.
Thompson slotted herself into a tie for ninth with seven pars and balanced nine-hole scores of 42 and 41.
Haley Brenner of Kent also competed in the girls oldest division taking 26th place.
Madison Justice of Lake Center Christian, the champion of the girls PTC tournament in 2016, finished in 11th place with a final score of 84.
BOYS 13 TO 15
Darin Hudak of Tallmadge, a former Matt Mishler Portage County Junior Amateur champion, earned the runner-up spot in the boys 13 to 15 age division, scoring an outstanding 72, two-over-par and one stroke behind champion Andrew Wyss of Canton.
Carter Troyer of Kent earned 13th with his final score of 81 that was 11-over-par.
Other Kent golfers included: Casey Troyer (17th-84), Charlie Huscroft (20th-85), Marek Seaholts (22nd-89), Josh Fisher (32nd-98) and Gavin Markham (34th-99).
GIRLS 13 TO 15
Lauren Garner of Kent had an outstanding day on the links, golfing her way to an 80, 10-over-par, good for a tie for fourth place.
Garner converted 10 pars on the way to her top-five finish.
The champion of the division was Kira Moore of Mansfield, who scored a four-over-par 74.
BOYS AND GIRLS 11-12
Jack Vojtko of Stow fired a 69, one-under-par, to win the boys division, and Ella Wong of Pepper Pike scored an 83 to take first place for the girls.
KENNY NOVAK CHAMPIONSHIP
This was the final qualifier for the Kenny Novak Championship that takes place on July 26 and 27, the two days following the Matt Mishler Junior Portage County Amateur at Club Walden in Aurora.
