The Rootstown alumni football team defeated Springfield 39-6 on Saturday at Robert C. Dunn Field at Rootstown High School. The annual event acts as one of the primary fundraisers for the Rootstown Endzone Club, which supports the Rootstown football programs. Rootstown's victory was spearheaded by a strong defensive performance led by Tommy Saviers, captain Bill Adelman, Trevor Shankel, captain David Reuting and Zach Williams.
"I was very pleased with our defensive performance," captain Bill Adelman said. "We had good pressure for our front seven. And our secondary made some great breaks on a few balls."
Saviers had a pick-six late in the game, featuring several cutbacks and utilizing key blocks for a 70-yard return.
The Rovers' offense showcased a featured attack, with Ryan Herman scoring three touchdowns out of the backfield. Saviers also scored offensively with a 37-yard pass from quarterback Jeff Eldreth.
Eldreth connected on several key passes throughout the game, with Jared Collins and Tristian Fletcher being key targets. Collins finished with over 100 yards receiving.
Eldreth had a one yard QB sneak after a beautiful seam pass to Fletcher.
"This year's team was one of the best we've had," Adelman said. "We had a great mix of talented young kids and several key veteran to show them the way."
