The Crestwood Lions Club was chartered February 12, 1971, with 28 members. The Rootstown Lions Club was the Sponsoring Club. At this time the club has 25 members. In 2009, the Crestwood Lions were proud to be the sponsor for the re-established Streetsboro Lions Club.
Through the years meetings have been held at various locations, including Hill Top Christian Church, Portage Faith United Methodist Church and currently at Jake's Eats at 4680 Prospect St. in Mantua.
The Crestwood Lions Club funds vision examinations and provides glasses for children and those in need. The group provides adult eye screening at the 4C's yearly craft show in Shalersville as well as at other local health fairs. The Lions also are actively supporting diabetes prevention and early detection programs.
Funds raised by the Crestwood Lions have supported the humanitarian activities of the Lions Club International Foundation, the Ohio Lions Foundation, the Ohio Lions Eye Research Foundation and other charities.
The club has provided funds for educational health care materials for the local schools. It has sponsored high school students who attended the National Forensic Tournaments and other International Youth Programs. In 2009, the club established a Leo Club in the middle school and supports them in their various activities.
Locally the club has sponsored little league teams, helped provide flags and Christmas decorations to the village, re-roofed the shelter house at the park, built shelves for the Portage County District Library, and helped renovate a historic building in Mantua Center. Currently the group supports the 4C's food cupboard, helps the DMRC with village projects and supports the Portage County Soap Box Derby.
The club has tried many fund raisers over the years including sales of Christmas trees, light bulbs, mums, roses, carnations, Lions mints and firewood. Other money-making ventures have been paper drives, turkey trap shoots, raffles and our food trailer. The group has continued with the successful ones such as the Lions mints, a 200 Club raffle, and the food trailer. Currently the food trailer provides food at Akron's Soap Box Derby rallies. The club participates in local activities including Mantua's Art On the Hill, the Mantua Potato Festival and at Monroe's Orchard for their fall festivals. The newest fund raiser is selling soy candles and all-occasion gift baskets. The club meeting in early November has the Crestwood Lions busy as Santa's elves making Christmas baskets. This is always an evening of fun and fellowship.
One of the group's primary projects over the years has been providing funds to Pilot Dogs Inc. located in Columbus for the training and placement of guide dogs for the blind. The Crestwood Club has funded 23 pilot dog scholarships over the years. The first dog cost about $1,800 and today the cost is $9,500. Blind recipients are provided a dog and spend several weeks in Columbus doing extensive training with their dog all free of charge.
The Ohio Lions are divided into 10 districts in the state. The governing body for the district is the district governor and the cabinet. The Crestwood Lions have always been active leaders in the 13-D District as well as in the state. Currently there are eight members who serve on the 13-D Cabinet. On the state level, the top official is the council chairman who oversees the Council of Governors. At this time the club has four members serving on state committees. The Crestwood Lions are very proud to have had three past district governors as well as a past council chairman.
The Crestwood Lions Club meets on the second and fourth Thursday of the month at Jake's Eats located at 4680 Prospect St. in Mantua. Regular club meetings start at 7 p.m. and include a meal. Please feel free to join the group at one of its meetings and learn more about Lions and how they serve our community and the world.
