Cinemark considers Cuyahoga Falls site

It appears that Cinemark USA, Inc. is looking to have a movie theater at the Portage Crossing retail development on State Road and Portage Trail.

On its website, Cinemark lists a 10-screen theater in Cuyahoga Falls under a heading of "future theatre openings."

When asked about this listing, Susan Truby, the city's community development director, said "I am aware that the developer is talking with Cinemark and that they have a great interest in our site. The deal is in the process of being finalized. A movie theater at Portage Crossing would be a great addition and also a good draw for other restaurants."

Mayor Don Robart added that officials hope that "everything would be finalized in the very near future," but also emphasized that the process is a slow one.

"In dealing with these larger corporations we now know that nothing goes quickly," said Robart, "the bulk of what will encompass Portage Crossing will be there for probably 50 to 75 years. For that reason, we are trying to be very patient with what we locate there."

Lisa Schwan, public relations/marketing manager for Stark Enterprises, declined to comment on the matter.

Stark Enterprises is planning to build Portage Crossing on the site of the former State Road Shopping Center. The city purchased the shopping center property for $10.2 million in 2008 and demolished it the following year.

Legislation was introduced to City Council in November which, if passed, would permit the addition of a movie theater to the retail development on the west side of the city. That legislation was slated for council's review on Nov. 19, but was postponed at the administration's request, and has not been discussed since then. Truby said she does not know when the legislation will be discussed.

"It will be (discussed again) when the developers tell me they are ready," Truby said.
